Choosing Schools in the UAE: What HNW Families Should Know

Relocating to the UAE brings many advantages: tax efficiency, strategic access to global markets, and high quality of life. But one of the early, weighty decisions for any family is schooling. For high-net-worth families, choice matters not just for academics, but for continuity, prestige, and global connectivity.
Here’s what you need to know, and where many discerning families are placing their children.
A booming international school ecosystem
The UAE is among the leaders in international schooling globally. Dubai alone hosts some 281 international schools, more than any other city in the world, while Abu Dhabi has around 151. The country has over 239–243 international schools across its cities.
In 2021, international school enrollment in the UAE expanded to about 689,000 students, outpacing China and India, on data from ISC Research and GESS. That growth implies both heavy demand and rising competition for seats. Add to that Dubai’s private school sector: 227 private schools serving approximately 387,441 students.
This scale is not just a statistic, it’s proof that many expat and affluent families prioritize international curricula over local schooling systems, even when costs are significant.
Which curricula and school models are preferred?
Most international schools in the UAE offer British (IGCSE/A-Levels), American, and IB curricula. Many HNW families lean toward the IB, given its global recognition and portability. Schools also differentiate via bilingual or multilingual programs, especially in Dubai (e.g. English + French or German).
Boarding or flexi-boarding is a feature in some premium institutions, giving flexibility for families who travel. For example, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai offers boarding options for ages 11–17.
The average international school size in the UAE is about 1,600 students, with average class sizes of about 22.5 students. Fees vary widely across grade levels and school prestige.
What families consider when choosing
For wealthy, globally mobile families, the decision isn’t purely academic. Key criteria often include:
- Continuity & credentials: Programs that lead smoothly into top universities worldwide.
- Mobility & transferability: Ability to shift schools across countries or curricula with minimal disruption.
- Reputation & accreditation: International accreditations and inspection ratings (e.g. KHDA, ADEK) give confidence to parents.
- Language and multicultural exposure: Bilingual or multilingual environments support children in global life.
- Boarding/flexibility: For families who travel often, having boarding or weekly stay options helps continuity.
- Facilities, faculty, and specialization: Labs, arts, sports, special needs support, and extracurricular strength matter at the top tier.
It’s worth noting: Dubai’s expansion is making school placement more challenging. Securing spots early is critical. Also, new premium schools are emerging, e.g. a new GEMS private school in Dubai with fees reportedly around $56,000/year.
The smart approach for HNW families
Putting it all together, here’s how many affluent families approach the schooling decision:
- Begin the process before arrival: tour key schools, understand deadlines, and reserve places.
- Prioritize curricula with global portability.
- Use accreditation and inspection metrics (e.g. KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi) as filters.
- Expect to pay premium fees, budgeting early gives more flexibility.
